Quick convenience can carry risk.
Remember that convenience should never come at the cost of security. At luxury restaurants and upscale malls, handing over your keys feels routine. But even in high-end environments, thieves look for easy access. Always hand over only my ignition key—never the full key ring.
Limit what they can access.
Valets and car wash attendants don’t need your house keys, spare fobs, or garage openers. Leaving those behind is an open invitation. I once saw a man drop off his Ferrari without removing anything—risky behavior for anyone, especially someone with wealth and visibility.
Watch for identity exposure.
Remove anything with your personal information from the glove box or center console. That includes junk mail, deposit slips, or any other documents that show your address. Even something as minor as a checkbook can give someone what they need to invade your life. I never leave my car without double-checking these items.
Don’t forget the small things.
Your registration and insurance card seem harmless, but they reveal your full name and home address. That’s all someone needs to plan a break-in. If you must keep them in the car, use a locked glove box or hidden compartment. Still, I prefer to carry mine.
Some workers aren’t what they seem.
The reality is, not every valet is trustworthy. A dishonest employee could easily note your address and take your garage opener. Once they know you’re at dinner, your home becomes the next target. Don’t assume security just because the setting looks high-end.
Prepare before handing over keys.
Before handing your keys over, do a full sweep of the cabin. It takes seconds. In high-traffic valet zones or busy car wash lines, this simple routine gives me peace of mind. Being intentional about car security should be second nature, especially for those with much to lose.
Protect assets with awareness.
Whether you’re at the valet or detailing shop, always stay alert about valet parking and car washes. You’ve worked too hard to let convenience compromise your security. A few simple precautions can prevent a major headache later.
