You must fight for your money.
Billions of dollars sit unclaimed across federal and state agencies. Most Americans don’t know they’re owed anything. Yet the government quietly holds vast sums, hoping few will take action. These funds range from old savings bonds to forgotten pensions. It’s time to demand what’s ours and track down billions in unclaimed funds.
Start with savings bonds.
Unredeemed U.S. savings bonds total over $29 billion. Many date back to 1935 and remain legally valid. President Trump’s 2020 Executive Order 13968 pushed for better access. Although Treasury Hunt was created to locate these bonds, the tool no longer functions properly. Nevertheless, the bonds still belong to rightful owners. You must dig deeper and advocate for retrieval.
Digitization efforts remain slow.
The Treasury promised to digitize savings bond records. This would allow searchable access to millions of bondholders. Unfortunately, implementation has lagged. As of 2021, 80 million matured bonds were still unredeemed. Despite intentions, the public reporting shows limited progress. Agencies blame technical delays. But the burden continues to fall on citizens to recover what’s legally theirs.
Defined benefit pensions go unclaimed.
Over 80,000 people have not claimed their earned pensions. The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) holds many of them. You can search the Trusteed Plans database to locate yours. The PBGC even offers tips for finding lost pensions. For more tools, try the Abandoned Plan Search Tool. Take time to check—these pensions are earned, not gifts.
Use national and state resources.
The National Registry of Unclaimed Retirement Benefits helps locate missing accounts. USA.gov offers links to federal programs and contacts. Each state also maintains a portal at unclaimed.org. You should check every state where you’ve lived or worked. Even if the amounts seem small, they add up over time. It’s your money—claim it.
Unpaid wages may also exist.
The Department of Labor helps recover unpaid wages. Their “Workers Owed Wages” (WOW) tool reveals whether you’re due compensation. Labor law violations result in funds held for employees. Additionally, the IRS may owe you a refund from a previous year. Always monitor these resources, especially if you changed jobs or relocated.
You must act to collect.
The government rarely notifies individuals about unclaimed assets. Therefore, responsibility falls on each of us. Billions in unclaimed funds will remain hidden unless we act. Use every tool available and revisit them yearly. Encourage family and friends to search as well. Eventually, more people will demand that officials honor their commitments to transparency and return billions in unclaimed funds to rightful owners.
