Happiness Who Is In Charge

Happiness: Who Is In Charge?

Who is In Charge?

Being married for nearly forty years has made me examine myself more deeply than if I were alone. Over time, you uncover parts of yourself and pieces of your past that you no longer like or even recognize. However, you also realize something crucial: while you have a life partner, it is ultimately up to you—and only you—to create your happiness. When both people in a relationship are self-sufficient and emotionally complete, nothing is taken away. Instead, the relationship becomes stronger.

The Allure of Something New.

Additionally, people are often tempted to look outside their relationships, convinced that something new and shiny must be better. Yet, it takes maturity and wisdom to see things differently. Much like trading in a well-loved car for a newer model, it’s easy to overlook the value of what you already have. However, that older, well-worn version lacks the latest gadgets and is dependable and far more suited to you. Unfortunately, you may not appreciate it thoroughly until it’s gone.

The Power of Personal Responsibility.

Furthermore, the more complete you are as an individual, the better partner you naturally become. It often takes years to understand a key truth: you cannot change another person, no matter how hard you try. They are not under your control. Similarly, expecting someone else to carry the responsibility of making you happy is a losing game. After all, it isn’t their job—no matter how much you wish otherwise. Plus, your definition of happiness may be someone else’s idea of misery, so why place that burden on them?

Building a Relationship That Lasts.

Ultimately, the secret to a fulfilling, long-term relationship lies not in constant adjustments or external fixes. Instead, it comes from the ongoing work of becoming whole within yourself. As a result, both partners can share a relationship built on mutual respect, reliability, and love—not on need or unrealistic expectations.
