Your Money or Your Life

Your Money or Your Life

Flashing wealth makes you a target.

In today’s world, your money or your life isn’t just a phrase—it’s a real risk. I’ve seen people draw attention to themselves by flashing cash, wearing flashy jewelry, or parking too far from store entrances. When you blend in, you stay safer.

Skip the showy jewelry.

Wearing expensive watches or large rings makes you a walking target. You need to leave those items at home unless you are in a trusted environment. While it may feel routine, wearing that Rolex on vacation or while shopping can send the wrong message to the wrong people.

Stay aware in public places.

I’ve learned to be extra alert on public transportation and in large garages. Those areas attract the opportunistic. It takes only seconds to become a victim. That’s why I walk with purpose, stay off my phone, and never look distracted.

Avoid handling large amounts of cash.

Pulling out a wad of money draws eyes. Even good people might notice—so imagine what thieves think. Whenever possible, I use a credit card or mobile wallet. Carrying only what I need keeps me focused and reduces risk. You may even want to consider having a decoy wallet in your pocket to hand over if directed to do so.

Be strategic with ATM use.

ATMs are necessary, but they’re also dangerous if used carelessly. I never go alone at night. Instead, I use machines located inside a bank branch or in well-lit, populated areas. One person handles the card, while the other watches the surroundings.

Park with intention.

I always park close to entrances, under lights when possible. Long walks to dark corners of a lot just aren’t worth the risk. If I must go out at night, I ask someone to go with me or wait until daylight. My safety is always more valuable than convenience.

It’s your money or your life.

Protecting your wealth starts with situational awareness. Whether at home or abroad, always remember your money or your life. Blend in, stay alert, and never trade safety for style.
