Staying Informed

Understanding Your Bias.

In my opinion, one of the attributes of being a responsible adult is living your life in such a way that you strive to be a well-informed individual. Yet being informed is only half the task; the other half is learning to be objective. This means recognizing that what you absorbed as a child, whether through your parents’ actions or inactions, the people you grew up around, or the communities you associated with all have shaped the foundation of your belief system. Every one of us brings our own set of biases to the table. On top of that, society itself establishes norms that influence what we consider acceptable behavior. However as of late these norms seem to have collapsed under the weight of political rhetoric.

Shepherd or Sheep.

Beyond your foundational beliefs, other factors ultimately shape the type of individual you become. Some people approach life with intention, clarity, and leadership, the mindset of a shepherd. Others drift through life reacting rather than acting, moving along like a docile sheep. Identifying where you fall on this spectrum can be a powerful first step toward personal growth.

Your Perspective Changes Everything.

One of my biggest frustrations with society today is our collective inability to agree on what constitutes acceptable personal responsibility. Compassion, kindness, and genuine care for others are qualities worth celebrating and practicing. Offering help to those in need is honorable. However, there is a fine line between supporting someone and enabling poor judgment or counterproductive behavior. When we fail to recognize that distinction, we risk becoming facilitators of the very problems we hope to solve.

Moving Forward With Intention.

Staying informed, and understanding the biases that quietly guide your thoughts, requires continuous effort. It involves questioning your assumptions, seeking out diverse perspectives, and being willing to revise long-held beliefs when presented with new information. It also means choosing to act with intention rather than simply reacting to the world around you. By cultivating self-awareness and personal accountability, you take on the role of the shepherd in your own life, guiding your decisions with clarity instead of being pulled along by habit, emotion, or societal pressure.
