If you had the potential, would you choose to save eight lives?
When I renewed my North Carolina driver’s license, I was reminded, seeing the little red heart on my license, about a decision I made years ago: that at my death, I would be an organ donor.
It’s one of those quiet choices that doesn’t come up often in conversation, yet carries immense weight. A small symbol, a simple “yes,” but one that holds the possibility of giving someone else more time, more birthdays, more conversations, more chances to live.
There are over 100,000 patients on a waiting list for organ donation, with 3,000 of those patients here in North Carolina. Even more striking is that Eastern North Carolina disproportionately accounts for a significant share of that 3,000. These aren’t distant statistics; they are our neighbors, our communities, our families.
What many people don’t realize is that anyone, from newborns to senior citizens, can join the organ, eye, and tissue donor registry. You can still be a donor even if you’ve been sick, had cancer in the past, or are living with conditions like HIV or Hepatitis C. The opportunity to help others is far more inclusive than most assume.
And here’s the thing: you don’t have to wait for a moment, like renewing your driver’s license, to make this decision. You can choose now. You can take a few minutes today and say “yes” to something that could one day mean everything to someone else.
