Life with and without cats

03-22-26

For decades, my wife and I shared our home with many different cats. They became more than pets. They were our constant companions and, in many ways, our children. Like all children, they brought both joy and chaos. Each cat had a distinct personality. Some stayed close and craved attention, while others preferred distance and independence. They filled our home with warmth, curiosity, and life. At times, they also tested our patience. Still, those moments became part of their charm.

Caring for Them, Even Away

When we traveled, we made careful plans for their care. We arranged for a pet sitter to visit multiple times each day. The sitter fed them, checked on them, and cleaned their litter boxes. We wanted them to feel safe and cared for, even when we were gone. Despite that attention, our cats still found ways to act out. They sprayed in hidden places, acting out of stress. Those moments frustrated us, but we never stopped loving them.

Remembering the Mischief and Love

Looking back, even their mischief feels meaningful. It reminds us of their spirit and individuality. We would not trade those memories for anything. Each moment, good or difficult, helped shape the bond we shared. That bond remains strong, even now.

A Quiet House, A Lasting Love

Today, they are all gone. The house feels quieter in a way only pet owners understand. Still, our love for them has not faded. It remains steady and present in our daily lives. We miss each one deeply, quirks and all. While fewer now, there are moments when we both still sense their presence.

Hope for Reunion

We hold onto a simple but powerful hope. One day, we may see them all again in heaven. We imagine a place on a distant hill, a patch of green grass in the bright sun, where we can reunite with our beloved cats, a place where we can share a cuddle and the quiet moments once more. Until then, we carry their memory with us. We remain grateful for every year and we feel certain that they too felt the deep love we shared.
