Early education shaped lives.
The formative years of a child’s life often begin in kindergarten. In the 1960s, the first private kindergarten in our county was opened by a former school teacher named
Mrs. Mimi Tripp Denton. She had previously taught in the county schools for six years, so she had stellar credentials when she decided to open a school next door to her home called “Mimi’s Kindergarten.” At the time, our public school system had not incorporated a kindergarten into the curriculum. Hence, Mrs. Denton was the pioneer who started it all, and she later helped establish the guidelines for the public school system. For eighteen years, she dedicated her life to teaching young children the basics.
Small details created lasting memories.
Some childhood experiences never fade. My first day at her school came with a gift: a red, hand-sewn pencil bag with my name on the front. It made me feel proud and special. These simple tokens carried meaning far beyond their size, marking moments that shaped my confidence.
Play and discovery built connections.
At Mimi’s Kindergarten, play was just as important as learning. Outdoor games gave us freedom, and with her ringing the bell, it meant we all had to go inside. Rainy days brought out pretend kitchen sets. Snack time felt like a celebration. Once, the fire department visited, letting us climb on the truck as sirens and horns filled the air. Even decades later, those moments remain vivid.
A foundation of respect.
My parents’ decision to send me there was wise. Mrs. Denton combined academics with character-building. She emphasized good manners, respect, and kindness. She supervised us with patience as we practiced spelling using giant pencils and separate erasers, reminding us that learning could be joyful. Mrs. Denton treated every child with equal care. Her love for teaching showed in the way she guided us through lessons and daily routines. She created an environment where we felt safe, respected, and encouraged to grow.
Lessons that endure.
Looking back, Mimi’s Kindergarten was more than just a classroom. It was a place where love, discipline, and learning blended seamlessly. Mrs. Denton’s legacy continues to live on in the lives she touched.
