Don’t Let Bed Bugs In

Don’t Let Bed Bugs In

A childhood rhyme holds truth.

When I was young, the phrase “don’t let the bed bugs bite” seemed like a joke. But today, bed bugs are a luxury traveler’s nightmare. Once thought extinct in modern hotels, they’ve returned with a vengeance. These pests hide in plush settings, and even five-star suites aren’t immune to their stealthy invasion.

Bed bugs hide in plain sight.

Adult bed bugs are tiny and oval, about the size of an apple seed—their color ranges from red to brown. Before feeding, they’re flat as paper. Afterward, they swell like a drop of blood. Attracted to warmth and carbon dioxide, they feast at night while you sleep. They can survive six months without feeding, making them persistent stowaways.

You might not even feel it.

The moment a bed bug bites, you won’t feel a thing. It injects both an anesthetic and an anticoagulant. That way, it goes unnoticed. A few days later, you might notice an itchy red welt. But some show no signs at all, which makes detection even harder.

There’s now a registry for that.

Thanks to the internet, travelers can now check The Bed Bug Reports. It’s a free online resource listing reports of infestations across the U.S. and Canada. This registry lets you investigate hotels before booking. Prevention starts with research.

Learn to inspect before you rest.

Before reserving a room, read reviews. Once you arrive, scrutinize the room. Examine the bed frame, mattress seams, and box spring corners. If you see minor reddish stains, insect shells, or live bugs, leave. Politely request a different room or change hotels entirely.

Avoid bringing them back home.

Bed bugs hitch rides on luggage and clothing. To fight back, a company created ThermalStrike, a self-heating suitcase. It kills bed bugs by reaching 140°F for 2.5 hours. Though pricey, it’s a wise investment compared to professional home extermination. They also offer a bag you can place your luggage in to help kill any bed bugs that may be on your luggage.

Bed bugs are expensive souvenirs.

Although small, bed bugs can create massive problems. They infest discreetly, hide expertly, and travel globally. Luxury travelers must stay vigilant. With the right tools and innovative research, you can avoid bringing the nightmare of don’t let the bed bugs in your home as well.
